One act of kindness creates a ripple effect of happiness

Ken and Charlene, an incredible husband and wife volunteering duo from Burlington, always believed that retirement was about more than just relaxing—it was about finding new ways to contribute to their community. Their passion for helping others led them to dedicate their time to local arts and sports organizations, where they spent many fulfilling hours.

Last year, Ken and Charlene came across Acclaim Health’s call for Memory Visiting volunteers. They learned as people get older, they might start feeling more alone and isolated. This can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, and sadness, especially for those facing early memory loss.

Intrigued by the Memory Visiting program, Ken and Charlene connected with Fiona, a Care Manager. Fiona’s passion and dedication were contagious. Ken explains, “we were shocked by the urgent need for volunteers.” Ken and Charlene knew they had found the perfect opportunity to make a difference.

After completing training sessions on volunteering with individuals with memory impairments, Ken and Charlene were matched with clients they could support based on shared interests. They were eager to lend a hand because they understood the importance of staying socially connected. Feeling prepared and enthusiastic, they were ready to make a positive impact.

Charlene was matched with Elsie, who lives in a retirement home and was reluctant to attend entertainment shows alone. Charlene accompanies Elsie to these shows every week, bringing a smile to her face. “I think she is happy to have me there. It’s always nice to have someone with you. She enjoys it and meets with some friends,” explained Charlene.

Ken has occasionally accompanied Charlene on her visits with Elsie and shares, “it’s more than a nice thing. It builds a strong relationship and is a two-way street, and you can see the bonding going on.” “I admire people like my wife, Charlene who go in there and interact and leave people with a smile,” shares Ken.

Ken, on the other hand, was matched with Ben, who has a passion for sailing and cycling. They have much in common: both were previously bankers and both have a zest for life and adventure. Their friendship blossomed quickly, fueled by their shared interests and mutual respect. “It was an amazing fit from the get-go,” Ken shares.

Ken and Ben frequently meet and reminisce about past adventures, finding joy in exploring museums and art galleries together. They’ve shared strolls down memory lane, visiting Ben’s childhood neighborhood. Their friendship consistently brings them warmth and joy.

Ken is a member of the Probus Club, which is a community group that hosts events and learning opportunities for retirees and semi-retirees. Ken happily shares, “I took Ben to a Probus Club meeting and he liked it so much, he joined!”

“It’s been amazing for me to watch Ben’s growth and see him out of his shell,” Ken proudly mentions. He was delighted to see how much Ben enjoyed being part of the club that they now attend together. Their bond grew stronger.

“Our friendship is a wonderful two-way street,” Ken shares.

As Ken and Charlene reflected on their journey, they realized that volunteering had not only enriched the lives of those they visited but had also brought them closer together as a couple. Retirement was not just about enjoying life but also about giving back and spreading positivity.

Cheers to Ken and Charlene, extraordinary community members who inspire others to join them in making a difference. Cheers to Ben for spreading even more kindness in return.  And cheers to you for supporting wonderful moments of kindness across our community!
