Our Burlington Adult Day Program is Expanding

Acclaim Health is thrilled to announce that its Burlington Adult Day Program will expand from 12 clients per day to 25 clients per day, and add Saturday care.  The expansion will be completed in early 2019.

The expansion is recognition that 12 dementia specific day program spots Monday to Friday is woefully inadequate for Burlington, whose older adult population has grown by 19% and which now has more older adults than children (Statistics Canada, 2016 Census).  Families have been stretched to the breaking point while waiting for dementia care.  The waiting list is so long, only those in crisis are currently being accepted.

“This is a huge leap forward for dementia care in Burlington,” says Renita Wood, Acclaim Health’s Director of Alzheimer Services.  “It really gives families the respite they need to keep the person living with dementia at home longer.  And for the person with dementia, they have the opportunity to socialize with others, try new things, and experience a space where they can be themselves.  This is hugely important for preserving quality of life.”

“Every single day we are grateful for this program,” says Laurie Martin, whose mom, Liz attends the program. “I know from personal experience that this wonderful news will make the lives of people living with dementia and their families so much better.”

The expansion has been made possible due to new operational funding from the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network (HNHB LHIN).  “We’re so fortunate to have partners like the HNHB LHIN who are as committed as we are to providing extraordinary dementia care in Burlington,” says Michael Marco, Acclaim Health’s Board Chair.

Acclaim Health is fundraising to help cover the capital costs of the renovations, equipment, and furniture required to accommodate the increase in clients.  Donate now [link] or contact Laura Pizzacalla at 905-827-8800 x2043 if you’d like to help.
